Kannawidan Festival: Narambak a Piyesta, Ittoy la Ilocos Sur eta!
At the end of January, the Kannawidan festival highlights the finest of Ilocos Sur culture, from traditional attire and folk dance to tribal rites and marching band competitions. But because of the pandemic it was postponed in February. It is well-known among all Ilocanos for its delightful and exciting celebration. You may attend with family, friends, and loved ones to try the dishes, witness the celebrities and musicians, and enjoy the entire festival while smiling before returning home. A celebration commemorating the split of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818 in the province of Ilocos Sur. This celebration features cultural performances, religious rites, and cookery demonstrations presenting the best of Ilocano cuisine.
The province government, led by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson, together with Vice Gov. Jeremias C. Singson, Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, and officials and staff from local government units and national government agencies, kicked off the celebration. The Suyo Indigenous Peoples Community Group from Suyo, Ilocos Sur, performed "Tadek Ken Balliwes" during the opening ceremony, a traditional dance that conveys joy over victory, thanksgiving, and other significant events. The first night began with a dancing fountain performance, followed by a drone light show and a fireworks spectacular brilliantly burned at the top of the New Legislative Building. The drone light show emphasized Ilocosurians' will not to give up in the face of the epidemic and served as a homage to all frontliners. Following that, a comedy night was staged at Quirino Stadium.
The Saniata Ti Ylocos beauty pageant was crowned on Kannawidan's second day. Bea Luigi Gomez and Rabiya Mateo the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 and 2021 were judges. For the first time Vigan gained a crown, Richelle Anne Presto of Vigan was named Saniata ti Yloco Sur 2022. Clare Arce of Caoayan was named Saniata ti World, Princess Tacazon of San Ildefonso was named Saniata ti Tourism, and Sta. Shireen Khalil of Cruz won the Saniata ti Environment championship. Meanwhile, Galimuyod's Julie Mae Villanueva and Salcedo's Nalyn Grace Baraquio finished first and second, respectively.
Kannawidan Festival always gives the best fireworks display. I am hoping that the Government of Ilocos Sur will continue this kind of activity. God bless and have a great day ahead.
