โBataan has fallen.โ
Our nation, the Philippines, has previously been assaulted by Spaniards, resulting in a long-running conflict. Back in the day, Araw ng Kagitingan (lit. 'Day of Valor,' also known as Bataan Day and Bataan and Corregidor Day, is a national observance in the Philippines commemorating the fall of Bataan during World War II. It is celebrated on April 9, though in 2009, it was moved to April 6 to avoid clashing with Maundy Thursday.
Officials in command of Bataan, where Filipino and American soldiers provided the heaviest resistance to the Japanese, formally surrendered on April 9, 1942. Third Lieutenant Normando Ildefonso Reyes, reciting a telegram written by Captain Salvador P. Lopez, addressed the Philippines and the world from the Malinta Tunnel on Corregidor: "Bataan has fallen."
โBataan has fallen. The Philippine-American troops on this war-ravaged and bloodstained peninsula have laid down their arms. With heads bloody but unbowed, they have yielded to the superior force and numbers of the enemy.โ
By virtue of Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987, April 9 of every year is Araw ng Kagitingan. Proclamation No. 466, s. 1989 on the other hand, designated April 5 to 11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week in order to โpromote, preserve and memorialize the principles, ideals and deeds of the Filipino war veteran as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth of the land.โ The week-long observance is an occasion to honor not only the Filipino war veterans who died or served the country but also to remember those who rendered honorable military service in defending the country in times of war or peace. This is to gratefully acknowledge their contributions in preserving our sovereignty and defending our national security.
Many valiant Pilipino soldiers battled valiantly and proudly for our dear nation. Many people have perished in the fight for our freedom. War is not enjoyable for everyone. People's lives are being squandered not just for one generation, but for many if it is not yet over. Pilipinos sacrificed their all to safeguard and restore our homeland. Demonstrating that they genuinely love and care about our nation, even if it means risking their life, by fighting for it. Especially for those who remain faithful even in the face of adversity. Memorials and their legacies, which schools are now teaching to future generations, will not be forgotten.
When compared to modern-day Pilipino living, our ancestors' difficulty and pride in fighting cruel Spaniards is not a simple undertaking. We should be grateful for our predecessors' sacrifices and bravery, which have made our lives much simpler. By commemorating Araw ng Kagitingan, we demonstrate our sympathy for and gratitude for the sufferings endured by our forefathers.
