Last month, Bigueños celebrated the "Artes Ita Paskua" Christmas festival. It bolsters and highlights the Bigueño's artistry. As a Bigeuño, I grew up looking forward to the most anticipated event and highlight of a Bigueno's Christmas, the unveiling and lighting ceremony of the city's massive Christmas tree. Before the "Artes Ita Paskua," the lighting ceremony took place during the Raniag: Vigan Twilight Fesitval. Raniag means light, which connotes the light that Biguenos offer to the Lord in thanksgiving, the beacon that symbolizes the love for their departed kin. It was a holiday not just for saints and deceased relatives, but also to prepare for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

When I was little, whenever December 15 rolled around, the neighboring 1170-year-old Bells of the Simbaan a Bassit would never let me sleep at 5 a.m. "Kampana ng simbahan ay nanggigising na at waring nagsasabi na tayo'y magsimba," Leo Valdez once remarked. The enormous, solemn and deep sound of Church bells reminds me of one thing, and that is the genuine meaning of Christmas. Vigan prepares for the birth of our Savior by holding 9 masses of "Simbang Gabi" at Metropolitan Cathedral and Parish of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Simbaan a Bassit, and to all local barangay chapels from December 15 to 23, 7:30 PM, and "Misa Aguinaldo" at Metropolitan Cathedral and Parish of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Simbaan a Bassit, and to all local barangay chapels from December 16 to 24, 5:30 AM.

"Ang kampana'y tuluyang nanggigising, upang tayong lahat ay manalangin, Ang bendisyon kapag nakamtan na, tayo'y magkakaroon ng higit na pag-asa," Leo Valdez added. Our Lord and Savior was born in a manger to a mother and a father. A shepherd, a few animals, and the three magi were among his guests. It's a touching reminder of the true essence of the season. This year has been difficult for all of us, but we continue to hold out hope that the pandemic will stop. That God is with us, has always been with us, and will always be with us, even in the midst of the pandemic's chaos and horror.
