Young Earth Advocates as an Eye-Opener towards an Eco-Conscious World

I lived my 16 years near the seaside in Mindoro, Vigan City. The main livelihood there is fishing. Mindoro is also known for its fresh seafood, and vendors in the city proper would use the name of our barangay to sell their wares. When I was in elementary school, I always encountered multiple trucks loaded with dripping black sand that was taken away from the sea. And my ancestors always taught me that the sea was very far away, but as time goes by, the sea eats the fields little by little. It is very sad, but it is not too late for us to make a change, to make our environment sustainable, to be grateful, and to appreciate its beauty.

As a part of a community, it is important to play our roles and to be engaged in small activities in our locality. We can start by setting ourselves up as a role model for others. We can make a big difference in our world by simply cleaning, saving energy, following waste segregation, performing the 5 R's, participating in activities that raise awareness about our environment, and joining clean-up drives like coastal clean-ups. These small steps would lead us to a big change in conserving our environment. As a student, it is important to take action and to make a move on this issue because the youth are the most idealistic sector in our society. Therefore, the youth must actively participate in conserving the environment. We should not take away the rights of the young to be involved in these issues. Conducting research would help us learn more about how to make our environment more sustainable. For many of us, our world revolves around the internet. Since the internet is widespread, I’ll use my social media as a tool and a platform to raise awareness, to promote an eco-conscious lifestyle and to promote the beauty of my own locality.

Because of the disasters happening these days, it is evident that mother nature is taking vengeance on us for our wrong actions in how we handle our nature. These rich bodies of water in my locality give livelihood to the people. Without these natural resources, I would not be able to be here, writing this essay. Fishing was the occupation of my ancestors, and it brought me to where I am today. And I’m here sharing my knowledge so we can still have a sustainable world and see the joy in the faces of the next generation appreciating the beauty of our nature.
