This school year brings a new modality of learning, which means we need to face new challenges. Blended learning is quite hard for me because I live near the seaside. The signal or connection is hard to find and sometimes it disappears during my classes, and I cannot do anything about it. Although some of my teachers are very considerate and don’t require you to join the class if you have a poor connection, some of the teachers check attendance. This makes me curious about what the situation is for the learners that are not financially stable.
Besides the weak connection, the main problem that I face these days is a lack of motivation. During my freshman and sophomore years, I used school activities, events, and programs as a motivation to study hard. Events such as DepEd Day, High School Day, Recognitions, Completions, Camping and so on add more excitement to learning. We all dreamed about attending prom, having a sleepover because of research or thematic, and the iconic events of the school like Ginoo at Binibining Kalikasan, Parade of Characters, Sci-Camp, Sci-trix, Career Guidance Month, Nutri-Jingle, and so on. It feels like the first two years of my high school is wasted. Hearing your name called on stage while sitting in the front chairs during recognition feels different than virtual ceremonies on Facebook, where you can screenshot your name and post it on your stories. Gladly, our school is conducting different activities from different clubs, but still, face-to-face activities hits different. Another obstacle is the gap between students and teachers. Some teachers create pressure in their classes or meetings and it makes me uncomfortable. I tend to leave the meeting because of this feeling. But many of the teachers are down to earth and humble to their students. They break this pressure during meets by cracking jokes. It makes us comfortable, it makes us more confident in being ourselves, and it makes us unafraid to make mistakes. Surely, it will give us excitement and motivation to attend their next meeting. The good thing is that some of our teachers understand our sufferings and often give us 2-3 tasks per week.
It is too early to judge this new type of modality, these new subjects, and our new teachers. It is just the first step of our journey in this school year, and there are 3 more steps to go, as Olivia Rodrigo said, "One step forward and three steps back." It is just the beginning, but for now, this is how I feel about it. And I hope in these 3 remaining steps, learning will be easier as Adele said, "Go easy on me, baby. I was still a child..." I had no time to choose what I chose to do, so go easy on me. "
